Congratulation Mian Nawaz Sharif!

By Shahid Rizvi

The scrapping of the Eight Amendment is a bold step. We encourage Mian Nawaz Sharif for his courage and for his insight and democratic attitude. The nation has now got rid of the unconstitutional and anti-people clauses empowering one man to intervene in the affairs of the Parliament.

The constitution prepared by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and passed by the real representative of the people stands revalidated in its original shape. Nawaz Sharif has unintentionally pleased the soul of Z. A. Bhutto and betrayed his benefactors. This is the way the current of history moves.

we have again started from 1973.  It is, however, strange that why Mian Nawaz Sharif did not cooperate with Benazir Bhutto when she had sought the cooperation of Muslim League for this very purpose. If Nawaz Sharif had any intention to get rid of this clause, he would have accepted the offer and the clause would have been scrapped much earlier. Nawaz Sharif has the reputation of having been brought up by General Zia-ul-Haq. In fact, the situation has been so grim and critical that there was no way out.

The economic conditions in the country are at the verge of disaster and totally shattering. It is impossible to enhance industrial production which needs work to the capacity in the present establishment and establishing new industrial projects on a gigantic scale that too in a very short period.

The implementation of any land reforms, in such a short period that land revenue could save the economy is impossible. Corruption is eating up the roots of the society and there is no way to change the habits and thinking of the people.  The expected black money did not convert into white money. With this situation, the failure of the Nawaz government was near imminent, to prolong with power, it was necessary to dislodge the President of his powers to dismiss the government.

A president would agree under the compulsion of circumstances, if anything, like a threat to en-bloc resignation, is offered. Nawaz Sharif had no choice but to untie his hands first. He did it. Well done! It is the victory of the people on the Constitutional front.
